Taste of Thailand’s Newest Experience: Dinner Under the Stars

Last month, Taste of Thailand was thrilled to finally launch a new experience; completely different from anything we have done before.  This first event in the My City series was an effort to get locals and visitors alike to engage with new parts of Bangkok they didn’t know existed.  As well, to hear stories and thoughts from locals who are making things happen in this magical city!

Sitting quietly atop an unassuming mall along Bangkok’s infamous Sukhumvit road, the garden at Hom Hostel & Cooking Club is a gem-of-a-space.  We were lucky to meet K. Toon, the owner of the hostel, who was keen on having us try out this new event in her garden.

Hom prides itself on not only creating a great place for visitors to stay, but also connecting people through food.  The hostel’s main space is a large kitchen used as not only a cooking demo area, but a shared community space for those staying there and friends who stop by.  What a perfect spot to cook a dinner for a lovely evening out in the garden!

While chef Autumn Maddox Mctaggart was in the kitchen, single-handedly preparing a 4-course meal for our guests, we were lucky enough to have the unseasonable rains stop and our outdoor setup commenced, finishing up right before sunset.

As guests arrived, they were greeted by the wonderful sounds of acoustic guitar and a welcome drink waiting in the garden.  Our bar included historic cocktails from Seven Spoons, craft beer from Changwon Express and wines from Valentine Wines.

Guests were seated at the tables nestled in the garden to begin the lovely international feast, which as chef Autumn told the group, was reminiscent of childhood memories centering around the Thanksgiving holiday and spending time with family.  Our other special guests also told us about their contributions, including K. Toon from Hom hostel, K. Regan from Seven Spoons and Dwight from our dedicated charity for the evening, The Courageous Kitchen.  This indeed kicked the night off with a warm welcome.

Guests chatted for hours over the family-style meal, listening to the lovely guitar stylings of K. Toey wafting through the garden with the faint sounds of the BTS running by and the Bangkok night beyond.  Many had come either alone or perhaps with a friend, but over the course of the meal were able to enjoy the company of strangers and meet new friends.   Finally, as dessert was served,  many even took it back into the garden for a chance to linger a bit longer on the rooftop.  The night was beautiful and the bar was open, so many lingered on into the early hours of the night extending this rare occasion of being able to enjoy the outdoors in Bangkok.  The sky was finally clear and the stars indeed were shining over the rooftop that night.  Best of all, proceeds from the event were donated to the Courageous Kitchen!

The Dinner Under the Stars was a lovely evening enjoyed by a small group lucky enough to snag a spot at the table for our first run.  We are looking forward to many more events similar to this in the coming months (and years).  We hope you will join us too!
