King Bhumibol Adulyadej (born 5 December 1927) was the ninth monarch of Thailand (Rama IX). He was the world’s longest-serving head of state having reigned for more than 70 years. He was regarded not only as the Father of Thailand, but as a role model for all through his generosity, compassion and sincere love of his country and his people. His majesty passed away on 13 October 2016, the saddest of days for the Thai people.

After his majesty’s passing, the whole of Thailand stopped, and the entire country, and the world, deeply felt sadness and loss. Thai people from all spheres of life as well as the expat community in Thailand expressed warm solidarity by wearing black or white dress and black ribbons. For many, this will continue on for the full year mourning period.

His majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was not only a great king but also an optimistic visionary, a hardworking soul filled with passion, a musician, a father and overall, the father of the modern Thailand. He traveled extensively to the remote areas of the country to understand how to help the rural people and worked hard to keep in touch with the Thais, understand their lifestyles, successes, and needs, treating everyone with equal attention and respect.

On the occasion of his coronation, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej said “We shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the people of Siam.”  Indeed he lived up to this promise and his legacy will live on in our hearts forever.

We are proud to say that we were born in the reign of King Rama IX of Thailand.
