Bae Sun LiDessert is a well-known pastry shop located at the heart of Bangkok’s Chinatown, Yaowarat. Taste of Thailand Food Tours had the opportunity to sit with KhunMonthon, the shop owner last week where he told us about his shop and pastry business.
-Good afternoon KhunMonthon!
– Hello, I am MontonAsavajindajitra, I am the owner of Bae Sun Li pastry in Chinatown of Bangkok.
Our family originally came from the Northern part of China, Sua Tao. We settled in the Samut Prakarn district of Bangkok first. My grandfather used to work in a pastry shop there and when he arrived he carried on the craft of making desserts.
One secret thing that few people know about our pastry products is that some traditional dessert recipes use pork lard as the main ingredient for a more robust flavor. Our regular customers often request us to put in the pork fat!
We used to have our original shop elsewhere, still in the Chinatown area, it was just around the corner from the current shop, we moved here a few years ago.
The most popular items are the specialty pastries made for the day of ancestral remembrance.
Speaking of my favorite food, I really enjoy the taste of KanomJeen (rice angle hair noodles) with chicken curry.
My last memorable meal recently was during the Lunar New Year with my whole family where we enjoyed seafood meal from The Sa-Voey on Rama 3 road.
I have already been there a number of times and still could visit any sort of fresh local seafood parlors, chefs working there really know how to prepare simple ingredients with big flavours like raw fish and sushi.
